CHAPTER EIGHT
RICK didnât know what had possessed him to invite Naomi to Lizzyâs volleyball picnic, but when she showed up at Rainbow Park wearing a pair of tiny red shorts and a white halter top, a stab of lust hit deep, robbing his brain of rational thought.
Obviously his physical desire was part of the reason heâd invited her, but in that case, his rash decision hadnât been too smart. Spending time with the woman who haunted his dreams was not the way to keep his distance.
He wanted her. Badly. And he didnât know what to do about it.
âHi, Rick.â Naomiâs greeting was cheerful and friendly, and she turned to include his sister and Lizzy. âJess, Lizzy. How are you?â
âGreat, Naomi.â Jess grinned. âGlad you could make it. Do you play volleyball?â
Naomi laughed. âYou realize Iâm too short to be a good volleyball player, donât you? But Iâll play. I can fake it with the best of them.â
âI donât care if youâre short, I want you on my team,â Lizzy declared loyally. âYou, too, Uncle Rick.â
âSounds good.â He glanced at Naomi, trying not to notice how she looked like a candy cane, only twice as good. âYou donât have to play if you donât want to.â
She gave a slight shrug. âI donât mind. Just donât expect me to spike the ball when playing the front line. Iâll be lucky if I can reach the net.
He thought she was perfect the way she was. âWould you like something to drink?â
âWater would be great.â
He nodded and walked over to the makeshift food stand. He paid for two bottles of water, the proceeds going to support the girlsâ volleyball team. On his way back, he saw Naomi laughing at something Lizzy was saying and his body tightened with awareness.
Damn. He was in trouble. Deep, deep trouble. While a part of him he was secretly glad to know his sex drive wasnât dead, he resented the way his body didnât listen to the cool logic of his brain.
Naomi wasnât for him. She wanted more than a simple, no-strings physical relationship. Just the thought of entering anything more complicated cooled his bodyâs response.
He walked over and handed her the bottle of water. She thanked him and then tipped her head back to take a drink. He caught himself momentarily mesmerized by her neck, then lower still to the shadowed cleavage in the V of her halter top.
Swallowing hard, he resisted the urge to dump his bottle of cold water over his head. He took a step back, grimly acknowledging that it would be a miracle if he made it through the day without touching her.
âCome on, everyone, itâs time to play!â Lizzy jumped up from the picnic table and dashed over to where several volleyball courts were set up. Teams were already being assembled.
Rick, Naomi and Jess followed Lizzy over to the grass-covered volleyball courts. The participants were split up into teams of six, and their foursome was paired with a guy by the name of Jeff and his daughter Amber.
